A Day-in-the-Life of a Senior Developer
Welcome to your day at leading interactive agency Malenke | Barnhart! After grabbing the day’s first Pepsi and saying Hey to your officemates, you review the current thread of emails and prep for your daily standup. Feeling confident on your project progress, and with no fires to put out, you spend the next few hours cranking away on an awesome new website the agency is building in Drupal. As the resident expert, you’re responsible for most of the architecture and implementation decisions from the technology perspective. Among today’s tasks on the scrum board, you’re tweaking a new theme you’re creating and researching a module to handle that crazy new interaction the Design team came up with.
After a lunch-time BBQ on our LoDo roof, you come back to news that one of our clients is experiencing some weird behavior on a site we launched a couple months ago. The project manager asks you to take a quick look, so you pull up the site, reproduce the irregularity and let her know it’ll take about 30 minutes to fix. You then fire up your favorite IDE and have the bug resolved in no time.
Before you dive back into your Drupal project, you check in with the other devs on the team to see what progress they’re making on their projects. A front-end dev has run into an issue, so you sit with him for a few minutes to help work through the problem, teaching as you go. You also look at the scrum board to see the progress a contract developer is making on bug fixes for another site the agency is about to launch.
Confident that the team is on track, you’re back into Drupal for a few more hours. As you work on the new theme, you come to a point where the visual design comps don’t seem to define what should happen. You stroll across the office to the lead designer’s desk and talk through the issue. She mocks up what it should look like and you have updated assets in your inbox within minutes.
The last hour of your day is reserved for a new biz estimate. You and the team have come up with a killer solution for a prospective client, and you’re putting some high level numbers to the dev effort required, assessing how much of the work you could handle internally and how much you’d need your contractors and/or dev partners to do, given your dev pipeline.
As the sun drops down in the sky, you glance out at the streets of LoDo and see that it will be a beautiful stroll back to the agency’s free parking. Before heading out, you check your schedule for tomorrow: Looks like you’ll have time for some more Drupal work with a couple technical conversations with prospective clients sprinkled in. Oh, and tomorrow is dessert club…you wonder what delectable goodness is in store….
The Essentials
- 5+ years of development experience
- 3+ years Drupal development experience with advanced theming and building custom modules
- Fluency in PHP
- Expert-level HTML and CSS and Javascript
- Proficiency with MySQL Server
- Experience managing and mentoring other developers and contractors
- Strong attention to detail

- Contributes to the Drupal community
- Ability to attack and troubleshoot problems
- Desire and ability to learn and work effectively with new technologies
- Familiar with agile methodologies, specifically SCRUM
- Solid multi-tasking and time management skills

- Love of fun, energetic, creative environments
- Experience working in an agency environment a plus
